Fixing Your Misalignment With Invisalign®

cleveland invisalign alignersOur team is ready to tackle your misalignment with an alternative to metal braces. Instead of traditional brackets and wires, we will correct the position of your teeth with a series of Invisalign® aligners. In today’s blog, your Cleveland, TX, dentist will discuss how we create custom aligners and help you obtain a straighter smile.

The Causes and Dangers of Misalignment

What causes your teeth to become uneven? Well, crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth could be the result of issues with the growth and development of the jaw structure and oral tissues, which leads to problems with the eruptions and position of your teeth. Thumb sucking or tongue thrusting in childhood could alter the alignment of your teeth, as could premature loss of primary teeth in childhood due to cavities or injury. Any impactions of permanent teeth could also alter the appearance of your bite. Unless treated, misalignment makes thoroughly brushing and flossing difficult, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The pressure on the smile could also upset balance and make issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding) much more likely to develop.

Crafting Your Aligners

To ensure a comfortable fit and treatment with precision and accuracy, each set of aligners will be custom-made for your smile. Using digital scanning technology, we will take a series of detailed pictures of your smile with a digital camera set in the end of a thin wand. The images will be combined to create a 3D model of your smile. In a dental lab, the aligners will then be created specifically for your smile. The aligners will be made from plastic, offering a comfortable fit that prevents gum or cheek irritation. They will also be clear, barely visible when worn throughout the treatment process!

The Treatment Process

A set will be worn every day for between 20 and 22 hours a day. About once every two weeks, you will upgrade to the next in the series. Over time, this begins to shift the teeth and correct misalignment. For adults, optimal results take about a year, and teens may need around 18 months, but the total time of course depends on the extent of your misalignment, and whether you wore them as the dentist recommended. They can also be removed before meals, and prior to brushing and flossing, making them a more convenient solution to alignment issues.
