Dental Fillings: What Happens Once You Get Home?

You may have a pretty good idea about what you can expect from a dental filling during the procedure itself. You have heard over and over that it’s completely comfortable, that we are gentle, and you know from talking with friends that since you’ll be numb, it will be a surprisingly easy experience. However, you’re left with one head-scratcher of a topic: What happens once you get home after your filling? Will life go back to normal? Will you feel okay? Allow us to shed some light on your restorative care aftermath, so you feel good about everything!

Will My Tooth Hurt Once Anesthetic Wears Off?

Once you’ve left our practice and you’re home or back out running errands, etc., the anesthetic will begin to wear off. Until that happens, we advise you to be very careful when eating (as you can accidentally harm your soft tissue if you bite your lip or tongue without feeling it!). Once you’re no longer numb, you may deal with a bit of soreness due to aggravated nerves. However, this will not be serious and is something you can relieve with over-the-counter analgesics. Your nerves will then relax and irritation will completely subside!

Will My Tooth Feel Weird When I Chew?

At first, it may feel slightly different, particularly if you were dealing with a very uncomfortable or serious cavity. However, we remind you that dental fillings are discreet, they allow your tooth to return to its previous health, shape, and function, and everything will feel normal again within a day or two.

What If My Smile Doesn’t Feel Balanced?

If you suddenly realize that your smile just doesn’t feel like it should because your top and bottom teeth don’t seem to fit together the way you think they usually do, call our team! Come in for a dental checkup with us, so we may examine your tooth. It may turn out that you’re not used to your tooth being the correct shape and you just need to adapt. Or, we may need to gently re-sculpt the filling the slightest bit, so your bite feels more comfortable to you.

Will The Filling Last Very Long?

Yep! Assuming you keep up with consistent preventive care in the form of cleanings, checkups, brushing, and flossing. You can look forward to many years, if not decades, of wear!
