Dental Emergency? Don’t Panic!

You don’t need us to tell you that prevention is the best plan for dealing with a dental emergency. A mouthguard should be in place during any contact sport, or during activities where falling or collision is a possibility. Prevention means not ignoring early signs of dental trouble, hoping things will get better on their own. Sometimes, however, dental emergencies do arise. If you have a sudden dental need, don’t panic. Your dental office is the place to turn for advice a dental emergency.

Take a Breath And Assess

It is not always easy to stop and think when things are going wrong. If there is immediate need for comprehensive medical attention, you will want to alert the medical chain of emergency care via 911. If your assessment reveals the immediate need involves discomfort or trauma to a tooth or jaw, your dentist may be the best first point of contact. This may include issues such as:

  •  A chipped, cracked or broken tooth in you or a child
  • A tooth that becomes loose or is knocked out
  • A sudden onset pain in the jaw
  • A cut or bite to the lip or inside the mouth
  • A severe or sudden onset toothache
  • Painful food or other matter stuck between teeth
  • Any tooth, mouth, tongue or jaw issue that is causing you immediate worry or discomfort

Call Your Dentist

While a dental situation may be baffling to you, chances are your dental office has encountered it before and can offer advice. We may need you to come in immediately. We may be able to suggest a way to make yourself or a loved one more comfortable, so you can be seen in a day or two. There is no need for you to wait and wonder on your own. You may find it helpful to program your dentist’s office number into your phone, or post it somewhere handy at home.
