Easy Ways To Prevent Tooth Decay

One of the most rewarding aspects of taking excellent care of your smile is knowing you’re doing all that you can to avoid tooth decay and other problems. One of the most frustrating experiences is to think you’re doing all that you can to prevent cavities only to deal them anyway. If this sounds like something you’ve been faced with, we encourage you to consider some of our suggestions for preventing decay, so your smile remains lovely and free of hygiene-related concerns.

Follow Our General Guidelines

When we set forth specific guidelines for your smile care, it is with a particular combination of goals in mind: To help your smile remain as healthy, as comfortable, and as beautiful as possible. This means avoiding tooth decay, gingivitis, functional problems, and more. All it takes is brushing your teeth daily (two times), flossing daily (one time), and doing your best to keep up with visits to our practice two times each year.

Be Careful With Sugar

You don’t have to stop eating sugar entirely. However, it’s important to recognize that when you do eat it, the longer it sits on your teeth, the greater the chance it’s contributing to decay. As a result, we encourage you to eat sugary treats in just a single sitting (rather than stretching it out over the course of several hours). We also recommend cleaning your smile after eating or drinking something sugary as a simple way to protect your teeth.

Keep Water And Sugarless Gum Around

You can easily keep your smile clean throughout the day by rinsing with a sip or two of water. You may also chew sugarless gum after you eat (or drink) for additional tooth decay prevention.
