Brushing And Flossing During The Holidays

You need to care for your smile every day without exception, but your teeth and gums are at a particularly high risk during the hectic and sugar-filled holiday season. In today’s blog, your Cleveland, TX, dentist talks about how to protect them during this time of year with proper brushing and flossing techniques from home!
Brushing the Right Way
You should first choose a toothbrush, whether electric or manual, that has soft bristles, as this prevents inadvertent enamel damage or gum recession if you brush too hard. If you have kids, make sure they have an age-appropriate size that is easy to use. Your toothpaste should contain fluoride, with kids needing a rice-sized bit and everyone else a pea-sized blot. Approach your teeth at a 45-degree angle to clean the top and sides, and then use circular motions for the front-facing ones. Each session should take at least two minutes, and you should also brush your tongue too. These actions help remove stray food particles and limit plaque buildup, fighting cavities and infection.
Proper Flossing Technique
Every evening we also need to floss. Once kids have teeth sitting next to each other, flossing is critical too. Take a length of floss tape 18inches to 20inches long and wrap each end around your thumbs, then hold it tight with your index fingers. Run the tape up and down each side of every tooth, moving below the gum line in a “c” motion when you do. For kids, they can use a floss pick, which could be easier to use with limited dexterity. Cleaning between teeth removes what a toothbrush alone cannot, and could help prevent gingivitis and gum disease.
Checkup and Cleaning Visits
To make sure your smile is healthy, and to remove all harmful plaque and tartar buildup, you should have a checkup and cleaning every six months. Now is a great time to see us, as you can use your 2021 dental insurance benefits before they expire. Your family can then start 2022 with a brighter and healthier smile.
