Helping Little Smiles Before School Starts

cleveland children's dentistry

Have your children started school year? Starting next week, many schools in the area will be starting back. Which means time is running out to buy supplies and get ready for the new year. We would like to remind you to consider scheduling a checkup visit for your kids before the school year starts! In today’s blog, your Cleveland, TX, dentist will talk about how we help improve little smiles.

A Checkup and Cleaning Visit

With a checkup, we take a close look at your child’s smile, using digital x-rays that employ a fraction of the radiation traditional systems use, and with intraoral digital cameras. We then identify possible areas of concern in the earliest stages. The earlier a problem is caught, the quicker it can be treated. For example, a cavity can be treated with a single-visit filling, instead of waiting for an infection that requires a full endodontic procedure. In the same visit, we also clean the teeth. The cleaning removes all plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. Doing so helps ensure fresher breath and brighter teeth, and also fights tooth decay and gingivitis. A visit before school means we could treat any issues that arrived, so day one your child heads back to school with a healthier smile.

Better Home Habits

Now that summer vacation is over, you can work on helping your kids once again adhere to a schedule. Make sure that schedule includes time to brush their teeth in the morning and evening with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Kids also need to floss every evening. You can assist your toddler-aged children, and monitor your older kids to make sure they’re cleaning their teeth correctly. Mealtime and snacks are also a chance to practice good oral hygiene, as you can encourage fresh fruit, veggies, water, and other smile healthy options.

Preventive Treatments

During their visit, we could also discuss preventive procedures to help protect their smiles. For example, we could apply fluoride varnish to strengthen the outer enamel during each checkup visit. We also have dental sealants, which are an acrylic coating added to the rear teeth to prevent food from being stuck between them. Sealants last up to 10 years and help lower the chances of a cavity forming! If you have any questions, give us a call to say.
