Creating A Straighter Smile With Orthodontics

cleveland orthodontics

When our teeth are uneven, this could lead to poor oral health and negative impacts on smile beauty. If you have crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth, then you should let your Cleveland, TX, dentist know. In today’s blog, we’re going to explain how we correct uneven smiles, and look at two different treatment options: braces and Invisalign®.

The Impacts of Uneven Teeth

When you have misalignment, this could make you feel uncomfortable with your appearance. In addition, uneven teeth make thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth difficult, which could cause tooth decay and gum disease to develop. The pressure on your jaw joints and bite balance from uneven teeth could also increase the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), two jaw joint disorders linked to headaches, jaw pain, and even damaged teeth. To enjoy better oral health and a more attractive smile, you need to tackle your misalignment!

Metal Braces

For more substantial cases of misalignment, you may need to wear metal braces. The process starts with the dentist placing a metal bracket on the front-facing sides of each tooth. We then connect a portion of an arch wire to each bracket with a band. We then adjust tension in the wire to begin shifting the teeth into optimal positions. The jawbone will reform around the tooth roots, securing your new smile. On average, this process takes about two years.

Clear Invisalign® Aligners

We also have more cosmetic alternatives for teen and adult patients. Instead of metal brackets and wires, we use a series of clear plastic aligners. Created and custom-fitted based on detailed digital images taken of your smile, these aligners will be worn daily for about two weeks. You then wear the next set in the series, and over the course of a year to 18 months your smile is corrected. In addition to being practically invisible, you can remove them before you eat and prior to brushing and flossing, which makes eating easier and ensures better oral healthcare.
