Same-Day Crowns: What’s The Story?

You may find yourself wondering if there’s any truth to same-day crowns or if this is just a name that’s used to convince patients that it’s something it’s not. Good news: The name actually does describe the restoration. So, how is it possible to receive a dental crown in a single day, when it can take weeks for the entire process with traditionally crafted and placed crowns? Fancy you should ask us! We are happy to walk you through what to expect.

About The Technology

How is it possible that you should be able to receive a dental crown all in one day and what does that actually mean, you may wonder? Well, when we say “same day” we are referring to the fact that we can come up with a plan for your crown, we can create your crown, and we can permanently place that crown over your tooth in one visit.

What’s So Different?

If you have never received a dental crown before, consider what makes same-day crowns so exciting: When crowns are created in a lab, the process takes more time. A patient must come in for impressions, the impressions are sent to a lab, the lab creates the crown, and then sends the crown back. This means at least one visit for impressions, wearing a temporary crown, and then a second visit for placement (which can take weeks of time). In this case, it all happens in one sitting.

How Does It Work?

Forget the goopy impressions of the past. With same-day crowns, we use CEREC technology to take digital impressions of your teeth. We then plan your crown with computer software based on your impressions. Then, rather than a lab, a milling machine creates your crown out of porcelain or zirconia. We place the crown, make final minor adjustments, and you’re done!
